Summary:

Named as middle of three formations of Endicott Group in Picnic Creek allochthon. Previously referred to as Kurupa sandstone tongue of Noatak Sandstone (Mull and others, 1985). Type locality designated as exposures on highest point in Kurupa Hills, sec.1, T34N, R17E, Kateel River Meridian, and a reference section designated as exposures in canyon of Akmalik Creek 2 mi (3.2 km) southwest of Kikiktat Mountain, sec.30, T12S, R10W, Umiat Meridian [Killik River quad] north-central AK. Composed of medium- to coarse-grained sandstone with intervening thin shale and siltstone beds. Thickness averages 39 m. Overlies Hunt Fork Shale(?) (Endicott Group). Underlies Kayak Shale (Endicott Group). Plant fossils have been collected throughout formation with largest collection coming from thin platy siltstone bed near top of formation. Assigned Early Mississippian (Tournaisian to Visean) age.

Summary:

Kurupa Sandstone of Endicott Group of Mull and others (1987) is adopted. Unit apparently becomes more shale-rich to west and is not recognized in western Brooks Range. Age is Early Mississippian based on plant fossils and sparse brachiopod fauna.
