Rogers, H.D., 1840, Description of the geology of the State of New Jersey: New Jersey Geological Survey Final Report, no. 2, 301 p.

Summary:

Author applies name Kittatinny limestone to the rocks also called blue limestone or formation No. 2 in this report. Overlies white quartzose sandstone and underlies 3,000 ft of dark argillaceous slate composing formation No. 3. Thickness probably greater than 2,000 ft. [As defined here, includes Jacksonburg limestone of later nomenclature.]

Summary:

The Kittatinny limestone consists of mostly dolomitic and unfossiliferous, variable in texture, bedding and color; color usually blue or gray, sometimes nearly black; in places a pinkish tinge. Thickness is 2,500 to 3,000 feet. Nearly all limestone of Kittatinny Valley and the allied highland valleys is included in this formation. Conformably overlies Hardiston [sic] quartzite and unconformably underlies Trenton limestone. Unit contains Late Cambrian and Early Ordovician fossils.

Summary:

Geographically extended the Kittatinny limestone into eastern PA. Unit includes dolomitic limestones of Cambrian and Early Ordovician (equivalent to Beekmantown formation) age.

Summary:

Revised the Kittatinny to the Kittatinny Supergroup in Lehigh Valley of NJ and PA. Supergroup includes (ascending) the Leithsville Formation, Allentown Dolomite, and Beekmantown Group (Stonehenge Limestone, Rickenbach Dolomite, Epler Formation, Ontelaunee Formation). Overlies Hardyston Quartzite and underlies Jacksonburg Limestone. The Kittatinny Supergroup is directly along strike with the Wappinger Group in NY and is correlative with it. Unit ranges from Early Cambrian to Middle Ordovician age.
