Name proposed for lowermost member (of 3) of Ivishak Formation of Sadlerochit Group. Consists of thin-bedded, laminated, silty shale and siltstone with few interbedded sandstones. Is 278 feet thick at type. Disconformably to conformably overlies Ikiakpaurak Member (new) of Echooka Formation; conformably underlies Ledge Sandstone Member (new) of Ivishak Formation. Contains ammonite and pelecypod fauna of Early Triassic age (late Griesbachian) identified by N.J. Silberling. Microfossils collected from another area include older fossils according to Bergquist. "Age discrepancy cannot be resolved at present" p. 12.
Type locality: exposures on both flanks of small anticline, along Kavik River, between Lat. 69 deg. 17 min. and 69 deg. 18 min. N., Long. 146 deg. 52 min. W., northeastern AK.

In subsurface Prudhoe Bay area Kavik Shale is middle formation (of 3) of Sadlerochit Group equivalent to Kavik Member of Ivishak Formation of Detterman and others (1975). Conformably overlies Echooka Formation or onlaps eroded surface of Lisburne Group. Is gradational with overlying Ivishak Sandstone [redefined]. Age is Late Permian and Early Triassic based on palynological data.
