Stearns, H.T., 1946, Geology of the Hawaiian Islands: Hawaii Division of Hydrography Bulletin, no. 8, 106 p.

Summary:

Named for type section at Kanapou Bay [20 deg 33'10"N, 156 deg 32'53"W, Kahoolawe quad] Island of Kahoolawe, HI. Comprises essentially all of Island of Kahoolawe. Described [Stearn, 1940] as pre-caldera lavas, consisting of thin flows of olivine basalt, caldera volcanics consisting of massive thick flows interbedded with yellow vitric tuff near top and post-caldera basalts and andesites. Elevation at Lua Makika is 1477 ft [thus maximum exposed thickness]. Base not exposed. Unconformably underlies 5 post-erosional lavas and pyroclastics of Recent age at cliff on Kanapou Bay. Assigned late Tertiary age.
