One of three formations differentiated in mapping of District of Kau which comprises about half of Mauna Loa and Kilauea Volcanoes, Island of Hawaii. Overlies Pahala basalt. Divided into prehistoric and historic lava flows. Assigned late Pleistocene(?) and Recent age.

Named for Kamehame Hill, 3.5 mi S of Pahala. [no type designated]. Comprises all lava flows (both aa and pahoehoe) and ash deposits from Mauna Loa and Kilauea which lie above the ash member at top of Pahala basalt. Is 5 to 800 ft thick. Lower part deposited in prehistoric times and upper part in historic times. Flows from prehistoric and historic times and basaltic cones from them are distinguished on map. Ninole basalt and Pahala basalt form kipukas in Kamehame basalt. Assigned late Pleistocene(?) and Recent age.

Kamehame basalt name abandoned. Rocks formerly included in unit are now part of Kau volcanic series of Mauna Loa Volcano and Puna volcanic series of Kilauea Volcano, Island of Hawaii.
