Summary:

Named as middle unit of Upper Cretaceous Allison Member, Menefee Formation, Mesaverde Group for Juans Lake in La Vida Mission quad, San Juan Co, NM in San Juan basin. Type locality established in southwest corner sec 6, T22N, R13W to lower slopes of Red Hill, sec 5, T22N, R13W. Composed of interbedded fine-grained sandstone (some cross-bedded), gray mudstone and lenses of coal. Layers of numerous, round, large, calcareous concretions composed of gray cryptocrystalline limestone above or below sandstone units which formed postdepositionally. Ironstone concretions common; has petrified wood, carbonized tree trunks, and plant fragments. Is 900 ft thick at type section; upper part 442 ft thick; lower part covered but 464 ft estimated and lithology thought to be same as upper part except for decrease in number of concretions. Overlain by La Vida Beds; underlain by lower beds of Allison.
