Summary:

First used as a formation (fourth of eight) of type Austin group in vicinity of Austin, TX in Ouachita tectonic belt province. Attributed to Durham (1957, unpublished). No type locality designated; derivation of name not given. According to Durham, Jonah unconformably overlies Vinson chalk, intertongues with Hutchins chalk to the north, and unconformably underlies Schwertner limestone in the type Austin sequence. Age is Austinian (Late Cretaceous).
