Summary:

Pg. 275, 311-314, 339-340, 355-361, figs. 1, 2, 4-7, 14, 17. /Johnson Member of Snake Creek Formation of Ogallala Group. Unconsolidated stream channel deposit. At type section subdivided into an upper part of massive sand and clay, 31 feet thick, and a lower part of sand and gravel with sedimentary and granite clasts, 39 feet thick. Total thickness 70 feet. Is uppermost member of Snake Creek Formation (restricted). Underlies sand and sod at surface. Overlies Sheep Creek Formation (restricted) of Hemingford Group with marked erosional unconformity; locally overlies slump blocks of Murphy Member (new) of Snake Creek Formation. Fossils (vertebrates). Includes ZX Bar local fauna in upper part (late Hemphillian NALMA) and APHELOPS Draw fauna in lower part (early Hemphillian NALMA). Age is late Miocene (Hemphillian NALMA).
Type section: on the Vance Johnson Ranch (origin of name) [approx. 15+/- mi south of town of Agate, on Niobrara River, and 1.5 mi east of Route 29], near the head of Matthew's (Amer. Mus. Nat. Hist. Bull., v. 50, art. 2, p. 63, fig. 1, 1924) "East PLIOHIPPUS Draw," in NE/4 NW/4 sec. 32 and southeastern corner of SW/4 sec. 29, T. 26 N., R. 55 W., [Chalk Buttes NE 7.5-min quadrangle], Sioux Co., northwestern NE.
[Name preempted by Permian Johnson Shale of Condra (1927) in Johnson Co., NE.]
