Type locality is on south side of Red Hill in Ignek Valley at west end of Sadlerochit Mountains, Canning River region, northeastern AK. Occurs at both ends of Sadlerochit Mountains and probably along north front, but not identified elsewhere. Consists of black shale and subordinate sandstone, coal or red beds. Thickness is about 2500 ft. Is youngest Mesozoic formation in region. Fauna differs from that of Kingak shale (new). Is tentatively assigned to Jurassic(?) age.

Correlation chart shows lower member of Ignek formation in Canning valley as of Albian age (Early Cretaceous). [Jurassic(?) age thus removed from Ignek.]

Keller and others (1961) redefined Ignek (p.203) to include only those rocks that were lithologic equivalents of Nanushuk and Colville Groups and placed lowest Cretaceous beds in Okpikruak Formation which included basal Kemik Sandstone Member. Authors of this study consider sandstone along west side of Canning River near Shublik Springs to be Kemik Sandstone Member. Upper part of type section of Ignek Formation is now considered Seabee Formation and lower part of Kongakut Formation. Thus Ignek Formation is abandoned.
