Summary:

Named the Housum member of the Mercersburg formation for community of Housum, Franklin Co., south-central PA. Unit is lower member of formation. Consists of tan to medium-gray, fine-grained, argillaceous, slabby, cream- to buff-weathering limestone with 10 foot interval of dark-gray, thin, crinkly, gray-weathering limestone near top. Contains lowest metabentonite of formation. Maximum thickness is 67 feet at type locality; thins northeastward. Disconformably overlies Fannettsburg member of Shippensburg formation and conformably underlies Kauffman member of Mercersburg formation. The Housum is of Middle Ordovician age.
