Summary:

Name Hill's Gulch Bed, introduced in unpublished M.S. thesis by Kloc (1983), refers to an erosionally resistant concretionary limestone or calcareous siltstone layer at the base of the Jaycox Member of the Ludlowville Formation in western NY. Unit occurs in all Jaycox sections between Cazenovia Creek in Erie Co. and Sampson State Park in Seneca Co. Varies in thickness from 6 to 30 cm and changes eastward from a shell-coral-rich, pelmatozoan packstone to a sparsely fossiliferous calcareous siltstone. Overlies Spafford Member of the Ludlowville in the east and the Wanakah Member in the west. Underlies an unnamed mudstone interval of the Jaycox or the Green's Landing Coral Bed. Diverse fauna includes corals, brachiopods, bryozoans, gastropods, and trilobites. Age is Middle Devonian.
