[Named for] Hanawi Gulch where forms single narrow band of aa, Nahiku area, eastern Maui. Is unit of Hana Volcanic series. Platy jointing (where present) exposes tabular feldspar microlites; contains some small phenocrysts of olivine about 1 mm across. At highway is 30 ft thick but base is not exposed. At Big Spring is about 100 ft thick. Overlies with erosional unconformity Waiaaka lavas and Makapipi basalts. Although relative ages for Hanawi, Kuhiwa, and Paakea lavas cannot be determined, they are regarded as approx. contemporaneous. Map shows middle(?) and late Pleistocene and Recent age.

Type locality: Hanawi Gulch at highway [20 deg 49' 42"N, 156 deg 07' 00"W, Nahiku 7.5' quad] Nahiku area, Haleakala Volcano, northeast side of Island of Maui HI. Completely filled valley south of Koolau ditch but only partly filled it farther north where valley was deeper. Assigned Pleistocene(?) age [no basis given].

Hanawi Basaltic Andesite of Stearns and Macdonald (1942) abandoned as formally named unit and called Hanawi flow of Hana Volcanics. Hana Volcanics assigned Pleistocene(?) and Holocene age.
