Summary:

Lava flows in upper Waikahalulu Gulch of pre-Makanaka and post-Waihu flows are named Hanaipoe Formation (3rd oldest of Laupahoehoe Group), Mauna Kea Volcano, Island of Hawaii. Overlies Waihu Formation and underlies Makanaka Formation (both new of Laupahoehoe Group). Assigned Pleistocene age.

Name "Hanaipoe Formation" is here abandoned and applied to chronostratigraphic unit, "Hanaipoean Stage". Volcanic rocks now assigned to Waikahalulu Formation of Laupahoehoe Group. K-Ar ages give from 81,100 +/-23,600 to 69,500 +/-2,600 yr B.P.
