Occurs above Wiley coal member and below Isabel sandstone member. Coal named by Wanless (1931, Illinois Geol. Survey Bull., no. 60). Age is Pennsylvanian. Presentation of new rock-stratigraphic classification of Pennsylvanian strata in Illinois.
Type locality: in E/4 sec. 24, T. 8 N., R. 1 W., Warren Co., western IL.
