Named for type locality on E side of French Valley, Winchester area (lat 33 deg 37'36"N and long 117 deg 00'00"W), Riverside Co., CA. Name first used (Schwarcz, 1966). Has been informally subdivided into members (ascending), A (4810 ft. thick), B (5450 ft. thick), and C (3000 ft. thick) according to lithology. Consists of quartzite, conglomerates, schists, and amphibolite. Interfingers with and conformably overlies the Bedford Canyon Formation. Intruded by igneous rocks of Cretaceous age. Considered Late Jurassic(?) age.

Rocks 1 mi E of Sun City, interbedded in Bedford Canyon Formation of Larsen (1948), most closely resemble French Valley Formation of Schwarcz (1969). Is designated Triassic(?) age or older based on pelecypods identified by G.E.G. Westerman of McMaster Univ., Canada.
