Name Flat Rock Member is here formally proposed for upper member of Raccoon Mountain Formation of Gizzard Group. Type section designated in Jackson Co., northeastern AL, where unit is 150 ft thick. Reaches a maximum thickness of 200 ft. Consists of an upper gray shale and a lower light gray conglomeratic sandstone, separated by the Fabius coal seam. Sandstone is massive, cliff-forming. Unit extends into GA and TN. Unconformably underlies Warren Point Sandstone and unconformably overlies Norwood Cove Member. Age is Early Pennsylvanian.
