Pg. 1302, 1314, etc. Falls City shale. Series of chocolate-covered bentonitic shales and carbonaceous shales with thin lenses of sand, in places fossiliferous. As TEXTULARIA HOCKLEYENSIS is found in these shales it is advisable to name them so as to differentiate them from the McElroy. The shale also carries typical Whitsett species. Is a lower zone of Whitsett formation as here defined. Occurs in Fayette, Gonzales, Karnes and Atascosa Counties, southeastern Texas. Overlies Dilworth sand (basal Whitsett) and underlies Stone's Switch sand. Age is Eocene (Jackson).
Type locality: west of Falls City, in bed of San Antonio River, forming the falls of the river.
