Summary:

Named as formation of Baird Group (new) for exposures east of north branch of Eli River (approximately 67 deg 47.5'N, 161 deg 51'W) western Baird Mountains, northern AK, also designated as type section. Consists of generally well-stratified ferruginous muddy limestone and interbeds or zones of calcareous to noncalcareous shale; locally includes some sandstone. Color is characteristically grayish orange and brown. Thickness at type is 165 ft. Interfingers with and overlies Skajit Limestone of Baird Group. In places underlies Lisburne Group. Age is Late Devonian (Frasnian) based on paleontologic evidence.
