Elberton granite intrudes Little River series in Wilkes Co., eastern GA.

Age determinations by isotope-dilution methods on zircon concentrates from Elberton granite yielded ages of 375 to 490 m.y. These data are in contrast with K-Ar and Rb/Sr ages of 250 to 290 m.y. reported from same rocks by previous workers. Older ages indicate a Late Cambrian(?) plutonic episode which has not been recognized in region previously.

Age of the Elberton Granite is Mississippian based on whole-rock Rb-Sr age of 350+/-11 m.y. (Ellwood and others, 1980: Journal of Geophysical Research, v. 85, p. 6521-6533).

Elberton Granite is Mississippian based on Rb-Sr whole rock age of 350 +/-11 Ma (Ellwood and others, 1980) and U-Pb zircon age of 320 +/-20 Ma (Ross and Bickford, 1980).
