Summary:

Dutch Creek sandstone named in southwestern Union Co., IL. Described as iron-stained, reddish-brown or yellow, rather coarse grains of quartz sand cemented with iron oxide, in layers 10 to 24 in. thick. Thickness 0 to 30 ft. Grades into overlying Grand Tower limestone and rests conformably on Clear Creek chert. Outcrops at many places in Union and Alexander Cos., IL, and is present in eastern MO. Fossils (Onondaga) listed.

Summary:

Unit is basal member of Grand Tower Limestone in southern IL and basal member of Jefferson Limestone in southwestern IN and western KY. Thickness ranges 0-11 m. Dutch Creek is time transgressive. Age thought to be early Eifelian in southwestern IL and late Emsian in southeastern IL, southern IN, and western KY.

Summary:

Dutch Creek Sandstone Member of the Grand Tower Limestone overlies the Clear Creek Chert and underlies a chert-pebble conglomerate of uncertain age. The only exposure of the Dutch Creek within the area is near the head of a gulch in the ridge north of Magazine Hollow in the SE1/4NW1/4NE1/4 sec. 11, T14S, R2W. Thickness at this locality is 1.5 m. Dutch Creek is the only member of the Grand Tower present in the study area. The sandstone is characterized by a case-hardened, brown-weathering rind that is several centimeters thick and covers the pinkish gray orthoquartzite within. Age is Middle Devonian.
