Named as middle formation of Bayfield sandstone group (new). Named for exposures on Devils Island, Ashland Co., northwestern WI. Consists of pink and white, thin bedded, pure quartz sandstone with abundant ripple marks. Thickness is 300 ft. Conformably underlies Chequamegon sandstone (new); overlies Orienta sandstone (new). Age is Precambrian (upper Keweenawan).

Is part of Bayfield group which in turn is assigned to Keweenawan Supergroup. Correlates(?) with Hinckley Formation of MN and Mount Simon Sandstone of southern WI. Age is Middle Proterozoic.

Is part of Bayfield Group in northwest WI in Lake Superior region. Considered one of youngest Proterozoic sedimentary rocks in Lake Superior region. Is of fluvial and lacustrine origin and is compositionally distinct from underlying Oronto Group. Correlation chart. Normal magnetic polarity. Is considered Middle Proterozoic on basis of relative stratigraphic position, however, has been assigned a Late Proterozoic (King, 1976) or Cambrian (Ostrum, 1967) age.
