Summary:

Named for Crow Creek in Berne quad, Custer Co, SD. Type section is at NW1/4 sec 30, T3S, R4E in Berne quad; extends north into Pennington Co, SD, both in the Midcontinent region. Consists of amphibolite schist, calcite-hornblende gneiss, calsilicate gneiss, cordierite-biotite and microcline-biotite schist, quartzite, and thin beds of quartz-mica-feldspar schist scattered through the formation. Is 152 ft thick at type section where it lies between Bugtown formation below (a new name), and Mayo formation above (a new name). Composition of rocks suggests they were mainly dolomite, shale, chert, and perhaps volcanic rocks. Assigned a Precambrian age.
