Summary:

Named as a tongue of the Rock Springs formation for Coulson Ranch. Type locality selected in sec 13, T14N, R104W, Sweetwater Co., WY in the Greater Green River basin. Consists of gray and brown, sometimes coaly to carbonaceous shales. Has coal beds 3 to 4 ft thick on the west side of the Rock Springs uplift. Has an average thickness of 80-100 ft. Overlies the Brooks tongue (new); underlies the McCourt sandstone (new unranked unit). Is of Late Cretaceous age.
