Named as upper of two members of Dyer Formation (revised, redescribed) of Chaffee Group (revised). Type area is in cliffs along southeast side of Deep Creek 1 mi northeast of Coffee Pot Springs (for which unit probably named). Measured section 15 (not figured) in type area is in sec 15, T4S R87W, Garfield Co, CO. Unit is widespread throughout study area except in extreme northeast part of area. Occurs in Rio Blanco and Garfield Cos, Piceance basin; Routt Co, Greater Green River basin; and Eagle and Pitkin Cos, Eagle basin. Consists mainly of light gray, thin-bedded, finely crystalline, dense dolomite; dolomitic limestone is interbedded in lower 20-30 ft. Irregular, roughly parallel stromatolitic laminations are prominent in outcrops. Isopach map shows unit thickening to southwest and ranges up to about 120 ft thick. Conformably overlies Broken Rib Member (new) of Dyer; disconformably underlies Gilman Sandstone Member of Leadville Formation. Measured section; fence diagram. Few brachiopods found in lower part of unit which are same latest Devonian types found in underlying Broken Rib; unfossiliferous strata in upper part of Coffee Pot may be Kinderhookian age.
