Summary:

Named for Clifton, Wayne Co., west-central TN. Consists chiefly of thick-bedded, gray, fossiliferous limestone, sometimes containing clayey layers and weathering into shale. Thickness is 0 to 200 ft. In western valley (region of greatest development), is equally divided into a lower variegated limestone and marble and an upper gray limestone, each 100 ft thick. Is same as Meniscus limestone. Underlies Linden limestone (Devonian) and overlies Dyestone group. Age is Silurian (Niagaran).
