Cliffwood lignitic sands and clays described as white sand, with seams of black lignite and thin beds of black clay. Its many sandstone concretions have yielded numerous plant remains. Thickness 15 to 20 ft. Top member of Raritan clay series. Underlies Merchantville clay and rests on No. 4 sand (laminated sand 40 to 75 ft thick). Exposed in clay pits around Cliffwood, NJ, and at Cliffwood Point, on southern shore of Raritan Bay. Age is Late Cretaceous.
