Summary:

Named for exposures at type locality along Circle Creek, north of Hat Peak, northern Elko Co, NV. Composed of porphyritic rhyolite with vitric to felsic groundmass. Has flow layering and microbrecciation. Intrudes Idavada Volcanics. Unconformably underlies Banbury Formation. Age is early Pliocene.

Circle Creek Rhyolite. Sample from Lat. 41 deg. 53 min. 30 sec. N., Long. 116 deg. 25 min. 00 sec. W., in sec. 18, T. 46 N., R. 50 W., Elko County, Nevada, yielded a K-Ar age of 13.8 +/-0.8 Ma (biotite). Sample from Lat. 41 deg. 54 min. 00 sec. N., Long. 116 deg. 22 min. 36 sec. W., in SW/4 sec. 9, T. 46 N., R. 50 W., Elko County, Nevada, yielded a K-Ar age of 11.6 +/-0.5 Ma (sanidine).
