Summary:

Named as a formation (1 of 5) in Coleharbor Group; named for village of Churchs Ferry, western Ramsey Co, ND, Williston basin. Type area designated in eastern and southern Ramsey Co; type section is in NW1/4 NW1/4 NW1/4 sec 3, T155N, R66W, Ramsey Co. Divided into three members--lower, middle and upper--which occur in Ramsey Co. These divisions based on shale abundance in the three members; lower member includes shale breccia and shaly till having 37-60 percent shale; middle member ranges from 23-26 percent shale; upper member is very sandy, ranging from 9-19 percent shale. Formation consists generally of shale in a very coarse sand fraction. Lower member probably deposited after considerable period of erosion and weathering. Upper member is very sandy and light colored. [No other lithologic description or discussion of lithologic sequence within the members.] Thickness not given. Stratigraphically above Camp Grafton Formation (new) of Coleharbor Group; stratigraphically below, depending on location, either Dahlen Formation or Gardar Formation, both of Coleharbor Group. Geologic maps. Cross section. Of Pleistocene age.
