Mellen, F.F., 1958, Cretaceous shelf sediments of Mississippi: Mississippi Geological Survey Bulletin, no. 85, 112 p.

Summary:

Named as top member of Ripley formation. Named for Chiwapa Creek, Pontotoc Co., northeastern MS. Outcrops throughout Clay, Chickasaw, Union, and Tippah Cos., northern MS. Characteristically is "bored" or "horseshoe" limestone or calcareous sandstone; irregularly indurated. Thickness is approximately 80 ft. Overlies Ripley marlstone; coarseness of Chiwapa sands suggests possibility of unconformity; separated from overlying Prairie Bluff-Owl Creek by sharp contact that may represent unconformity or diastem. [Age is Late Cretaceous.]
