Named as sandstone in Kanawha formation. Probably named for community of Chilton, Kanawha Co., western WV. Consists of dull-gray or dove-colored, fine-grained, micaceous sandstone, often containing calcareous-siliceous layers. Thickness ranges from 30 to 50 ft. Underlies Lower Winifrede sandstone and overlies Chilton coal. [Age is Pennsylvanian.]
