Summary:

Named as lower member of Careaga sandstone, Santa Maria district, CA. Type region designated as north slope of Purisima Hills south of Careaga station of now abandoned Pacific Coast RR, Santa Barbara Co, CA. Consists of fine-grained, generally massive, soft sandstone; lower part is typically very fine-grained and light gray, but most of unit is light yellowish brown. Has maximum thickness of 1000 ft. Gradationally overlies Foxen mudstone. Overlaps part of the Sisquoc formation. Underlies Graciosa coarse-grained member (new) of Careaga sandstone. Age is late Pliocene based on abundant megafossils, some of which are listed in report.
