Named as member of Chemung formation of Ithaca region. Probably named for either Cayuta Creek or Cayuta Lake. Exposed from Cayuta Lake, along Cayuta Creek, to discharge at Susquehanna River, Schuyler Co., western NY. Thickness is 600 ft. Contains typical Chemung fauna. Overlies Enfield shale member of Nunda formation.
