Named for Cattrons Mill on Elk Creek, Grayson Co., southwestern VA, where one of the larger outcrops occurs. Largest outcrop area occurs north of Point Lookout Mountain in Elk Creek valley and northeastward along Farmers Branch, where it connects with an irregular area extending northwest of Spring Valley and west of Fallville. Other exposures are near Longs Gap, west and northeast of Big Ridge, and near Bennington Mill. Consists of fine-grained, grayish-green, gneissic rock. Also includes unmapped amphibolite facies. Is intruded into and is associated with Saddle gneiss in many outcrops. Age is Precambrian.
