Summary:

Named as basal member of San Joaquin formation. Type locality designated as Cascajo Hill on west flank of South Dome, Kettleman Hills [Avenal Gap 7.5' quad, Kern Co] San Joaquin Valley, CA. May occur in subsurface of southern San Joaquin Valley. Consists of conglomerate and generally blue sandstone. Average thickness is 50 ft but at places is greater. Overlies Etchegoin formation. Fossils (listed with localities and identified by Ralph Stewart and W.P. Woodring) include coral, echinoids, brachiopod, gastropods, pelecypods, barnacles, fish remains, horse(?) tooth, porpoise and eared seal. Age of San Joaquin formation given as late Pliocene.
