Capote Mountain Tuff mapped as one of seven formations of Vieja Group in the Sierra Vieja area, Presidio Co, west TX in Permian basin. Vieja Group is shown on the Correlation of Map Units as consisting of (ascending): Gill Breccia, Colmena Tuff, Buckshot Ignimbrite, Chambers Tuff, Bracks Rhyolite, Capote Mountain Tuff, and Mitchell Mesa Welded Tuff. Capote Mountain contains fine-grained, vitric, tuffaceous sandstone and siltstone, a few interbeds of conglomerate. In the north is very light gray with a few pale red beds; in the south the lower two-thirds is pale red, the upper one-third very light gray. Thickness is 600-1,200 ft.
