Named as 4th from uppermost member (of 8 named members) of Schoonover Formation (new) for Cap Winn Creek in Bull Run quad, Elko Co, NV. Best seen along divide ridge between tributaries of Deep and Jack creeks in northern Independence Mountains. Shown on geologic map of portions of Bull Run and Wildhorse quads. Consists of distinctive red, jasperiod chert and argillaceous lutites with grayish-red to dusky-red, gray, grayish-green, bluish-gray, and white colors. Cherts are thin- to very thick-bedded. Unit is about 350 ft thick. Overlies Harrington Creek Member; underlies Ott Creek Member (both new and of Schoonover Formation). Is Mississippian age.

Three samples of radiolarian chert from Cap Winn Member of Schoonover Formation collected at 41 deg 33.78'N, 116 deg 0.86'W and 41 deg 32.54'N, 116 deg 3.09'W and 41 deg 32.17' N, 116 deg 4.4'W yielded ages from Early to Late Mississippian. Samples were collected from chert immediately above "structurally higher thrust" [of Schoonover sequence].
