Summary:

Name applied to a columnar basalt widely distributed in Yellowstone Canyon, northern part of Yellowstone National Park, WY, Yellowstone province. Source of name not specifically stated [though probably is Yellowstone Canyon]. No type locality designated. Is 150 to 200 ft thick. The lower 8 to 10 ft has columns 2 to 4 ft thick; the remainder has columns 4 to 6 in thick. Composed of olivine basalt with titaniferous augite. Is characterized by lack of alteration and deformation. The thick columns are coarse grained; the thin columns are fine grained. Is associated with gravels near Overhanging Cliff about 150 ft thick. Stratigraphically is older and younger than some unnamed rhyolites. Of Miocene-Pliocene age. Geologic map.
