Summary:

Probably named for village of Cane Valley, west-central St. Croix, VI. Named as a formation in Mount Eagle Group. Occurs in western St. Croix. Most easily mapped on south limb of Brooks Hill anticline where rocks of adjacent units differ markedly. Consists of mudstones and interbedded tuffaceous sandstones. Maximum thickness is 1,700 ft; thins to north. Divided into (ascending): Hope Member at base of formation, consisting of tuffaceous sandstone and mudstone and best exposed in Allandale Gut (Creek), 0.5 mi north of Estate Hope; Robe Hill Member, consisting of medium- to coarse-grained tuffaceous sandstone interbedded in a 3:1 ratio with mudstone and best exposed in a road cut 2,000 ft north-northeast of Robe Hill; and Springfield member, consisting of mudstone and fine-grained tuffaceous sandstone lithologically indistinguishable from the basal Hope Member and best exposed at road metal quarry at Estate Springfield. Overlies Allandale Formation; underlies Judith Fancy Formation. To the north, thins and cannot be separately mapped from older Caledonia Formation. Age is Late Cretaceous (Campanian(?)). Report includes geologic map and correlation charts.

Summary:

Author follows usage of Whetten (1966) for the geologic units on St. Croix, VI. They include (ascending) the Late Cretaceous Mount Eagle Group, which consists of the Caledonia Formation, Allandale Formation, Cane Valley Formation (and its East End Member), and Judith Fancy Formation; Late Cretaceous Southgate Diorite and Fountain Gabbro intrusions; and Tertiary Jealousy Formation (early Eocene to middle Miocene) and Kingshill Marl (late Miocene, based on Gill, 1990).
