Summary:

Named as 5th from lowermost member (of 7) of Deer Butte Formation for Burnt Mountain two mi southeast of type locality at N/2 sec.23 T22S R43E, Malheur Co, OR. Upper part is medium volcanic-granule conglomerate (52 ft thick); lower part is volcanic breccia (4 ft thick) at measured section of Deer Butte Formation. Overlies Quartz Mountain Basalt Member; underlies Sourdough Basin Basalt Member (both new and of Deer Butte Formation). Age of Deer Butte Formation is believed to be Miocene based on fossils and probably early Pliocene(?) based on stratigraphic relations
