Summary:

Unit is named the Box Canyon A Formation. Type section designated as exposures in Hot Creek Range at northeast juncture of Hot Creek Canyon and Box Canyon, except for upper 15 m of upper ignimbrite unit which is best exposed 0.4 km to west, on west side of Box Canyon, SW/4, T8N R49E, Nye Co., NV. Divided into informal upper and lower ignimbrite units. Composed of vitric to crystal-vitric, nonwelded to moderately welded dacite tuff and dacite lapilli tuff. Each unit contains an intensely welded zone which makes Box Canyon Formation an excellent stratigraphic marker. Thickness is 115 m at type. Unconformably underlies olivine basalt of Little Fish Lake (new). Age is Oligocene (Whitneyan Stage) based on K-Ar (biotite) age of 27 Ma.
