Sandstones called the "Boskydell" in southern IL are brownish to reddish gray, fine to medium grained, and fossiliferous. They occur at several localities and are used as marker beds. The exact age has not been determined. Use of the name Boskydell Sandstone has been discouraged because it is likely that fossiliferous sandstones of different ages have been identified as Boskydell. Author of this report interprets ages of the sandstones by using palynology of coal beds lying closely below or above these sandstones. Age of the unit near the town of Boskydell and elsewhere in Jackson Co. is early Desmoinesian and is actually part of the golden sandstone of the Tradewater Formation. The fossiliferous marine facies similar to the Boskydell that occurs in the Murray Bluff Sandstone Member in Saline and Pope Cos. is late Atokan in age. A similar facies in Williamson Co. is early Atokan. Author recommends discontinuing the use of the name Boskydell.
