[Probably named for Bates Mountain] Type section designated as exposures on east flank of Bates Mountain, from center sec.35, west to top of Bates Mountain in center sec.34 T20N R46E, Mount Callaghan quad, Lander Co, central NV. Composed of unwelded pumice tuff, vitrophyre, and densely welded tuff. Attains 180 m thickness. Unconformably overlies tuff of Bottle Summit and in type section tuff of Dry Creek. Assigned Oligocene or Miocene age based on K-Ar determination of 25 Ma (E.H. Mckee).

Unit is sketch mapped and described in northern Nye, southernmost Lincoln, and Eureka Cos., NV. All five cooling units occur in Clipper Canyon, Lander Co; units 4 and 5 occur at Butler Creek section, Nye Co., and unit 4 ("swiss cheese") unit occurs in Crested Wheat section, Nye Co. K-Ar ages on sanidine from Crested Wheat section (unit 4) yielded 22.8 +/-0.9 Ma; from Clipper Canyon section (units 5 & 2) yielded 23.7 +/-1.0 and 22.2 +/-0.9 Ma. "Redefinition of the Oligocene-Miocene boundary at 26 m.y. (million years) by Geologic Society of London (1964) suggests that the formation should be considered Miocene." p. E5.

Age is modified from Oligocene or Miocene to Miocene based on K-Ar age of 24 Ma.

Unit 5, uppermost cooling unit of Sargent and McKee (1969) removed from Bates Mountain Tuff and assigned to an informally-named unit. Areal limits extended to include Shoshone, Toiyabe, Simpson Park, Toquima and Monitor Ranges.

Age is modified from Miocene to Oligocene [based on recalculation using new radioactive decay constants]. Time scale followed places Oligocene-Miocene boundary at 22.5 Ma. (Berggren and others, 1978)

Age for the Bates Mountain Tuff in the report area is considered to be Oligocene and (or) Miocene on the basis of radiometric ages of 23 Ma and 25 Ma from the unit and on stratigraphic relations.

Age of the Bates Mountain Tuff is modified from Oligocene to: late Oligocene and (or) early Miocene on the basis of regional stratigraphic relationships and a radiometric age (K-Ar) of approximately 25 Ma.
