Summary:

Named the Barton River formation for the Barton River, VT. Consists of mostly slates and phyllites intercalated with limestones and calcareous schists. Calcareous rocks are more abundant toward top; phyllites most common at top. Thickness is difficult to determine because of overturning; about 8800 feet. The Barton River underlies the Westmore formation and unconformably overlies the Ayers Cliff formation. Unit is considered of Silurian age based on stratigraphic position.
