Pg. 55 (fig. 1), 56. Ballard formation of Meade group. Name proposed to include deposits between Rexroad formation below and Crooked Creek formation above in southwestern Kansas. Thickness about 20 feet. Includes Angell member (new) at base and Missler member. Separated by erosional unconformities from both underlying and overlying formations. Fossiliferous (mollusks, vertebrates). Age is Pleistocene (Nebraskan and Aftonian).
Type locality: on Big Springs Ranch, in secs. 7 and 18, T. 32 S., R. 28 W., Meade Co., southwestern KS. Named from Louise Ballard Ranch which is shown on Meade County Platt book as having included the present Big Springs Ranch.

Fossils (Sanders, Deer Park, and Spring Creek local faunas). Age is Pliocene (Blancan NALMA); Plio-Pleistocene boundary placed at base of Irvingtonian NALMA (base of Nebraskan-Aftonian), = 1.8 Ma.
