Pg. 1345-1361. Baird Group. Name applied to thick succession of carbonate rocks typically exposed in western Baird Mountains, Brooks Range, northwestern Alaska. Consists of Kugururok Formation and Eli Limestone (new) in western Brooks Range and of Skajit Limestone. Over much of Brooks Range the subthrust Baird Group consists only of Skajit Limestone, underlies Endicott Group (new) and is no younger than Frasnian. Its lower part is generally unfossiliferous and the base is not exposed; at one place it includes rocks of probable Silurian age. In places underlies Lisburne Group. Age Is Silurian(?), Middle(?) and Late Devonian.

Corals recently found in upper part of Baird Group near Romanzof uplift are Middle Devonian (W.A. Oliver, written commun., 1968). Thus age of Baird Group is Middle and Late Devonian and older(?).

Fragmentary graptolites from northeastern Bairds Mountain quad have been identified as Early Silurian or Ordovician by Claire Carter and Michael Churkin, Jr. Tailleur and Pessel confirmed that graptolite-bearing beds gradationally underlie dolomite in lower part of Baird Group. Age is possibly Ordovician(?) and Silurian to Late Devonian.

In one section near base of Baird Group, Ludlovian brachiopods have been identified (J.T. Dutro, Jr., written commun., 1968). Therefore age of Baird Group is Silurian to Late Devonian. Its formations are (ascending); Skajit Limestone (Silurian to Late Devonian, Gedinnian to Frasnian), Eli Limestone (Middle and Late Devonian, Givetian to Famennian), and Kugururok Formation (Late Devonian, Frasnian and Famennian).

Baird Group in Hub Mountain in northwestern Baird Mountains quad contains well-preserved graptolite fauna. Unit at this location is considered Cambrian to Silurian age based on graptolite [and brachiopod] fossils and stratigraphic relations. Overall age of unit is Cambrian to Late Devonian.

Overall unit age is Middle Cambrian to Late Devonian based on age for (undivided part of) group in Hub Mountain area given as "as old as Middle Cambrian based on mollusks, brachiopods, and trilobites."
