Pg. 21-28. Attean Quartz Monzonite. Pink and green porphyritic quartz monzonite with large K-feldspar phenocrysts. Intrudes granofels and diorite; intruded by Ordovician or younger rocks; unconformably underlies Upper Silurian metasedimentary rocks. Age is Early Ordovician.
Type locality: along line trending S. 70 deg. W. from unnamed islands in southwest part of Attean Pond to summit of Attean Mountain, Attean quadrangle, Somerset Co., west-central ME. Named for Attean Pond and Attean Mountain in Attean Twp.

Pg. 17, geologic time scale (inside front cover). Attean Quartz Monzonite (Late Ordovician). Gangue muscovite sample from vein cutting Attean Quartz Monzonite, at Lat. 45 deg. 32 min. 00 sec. N., Long. 70 deg. 13 min. 00 sec. W., Long Pond quadrangle, Somerset County, Maine, yielded a Rb-Sr age of 448 +/-20 Ma (muscovite) and a K-Ar age of 440 +/-14 Ma (muscovite) [close to Ordovician-Silurian boundary (440-430 Ma)]. Cady (1969) published age of 433 Ma for this sample; ages recalculated using decay constants of Steiger and Jager, 1977 (Earth Planet. Sci. Letters, v. 36, p. 359-362).

Eight stocks in northern New Hampshire and west-central Maine are now assigned to the Highlandcroft Plutonic Suite, including the Attean Quartz Monzonite. Isotopic age of the Attean is 443+/-4 Ma, modifying the age of this unit to Late Ordovician.
