Summary:

Pg. 33, 45 (table 1), pl. 1. Assumption coal member of Spoon formation (new) of Kewanee group (new). Present in lower part of Spoon. Tentatively correlated with Murphysboro (No. 1) and Rock Island (No. 1) coals. Age is Middle Pennsylvanian (Desmoinesian). Report presents new rock-stratigraphic classification of Pennsylvanian strata in Illinois. Cyclical classification retained but is entirely independent of rock-stratigraphic classification.
Type locality: mine in NE/4 NW/4 sec. 2, T. 12 N., R. 1 E., Assumption quadrangle, Christian Co., southwestern IL. Coal named by Cady (1935, Illinois Geol. Survey Bull. 62).
