Summary:

Annapolis rhyolite (new) of Van East group (new). Briefly summarized in reports by W.C. Hayes and J.A. Martin, p. 32, 33, and W.C. Hayes, p. 83 (table 1), this volume. New names are credited to Tolman and Robertson (in prep.) [1969, Missouri Div. Geol. Survey Water Res. Rpt. Inv., no. 44 (Contrib. to Precambrian Geol., no. 1)]. Consists of at least three facies or individual flows. Near Annapolis, is a dark-gray to black porphyritic rhyolite with pinkish-gray feldspar phenocrysts. Two miles east of Annapolis, is a reddish- to chocolate-brown porphyry with many feldspar and quartz phenocrysts. A dark-red to reddish-brown cryptocrystalline porphyry appears to overlie other two varieties. Age is Precambrian.
Annapolis is in Madison Co., southeastern MO.

Summary:

Annapolis rhyolite of Van East group. Exposed in St. Francois Mountains, southeastern Missouri. At type locality, and on nearby hill (in NW/4 sec. 15, T. 31 N., R. 3 E.), is a dark-gray to black porphyritic rhyolite containing few pinkish-gray feldspar and quartz phenocrysts. In T. 31 N., R. 4 E., On western and southern lower slopes of Grassy Mountain (in sec. 7), Stony Mountain (in sec. 19) and surrounding hills (in secs. 16, 17, and 20), is characterized by reddish- to chocolate-brown color and abundant feldspar and quartz phenocrysts. Age is Precambrian.
Type locality: old May quarry on west side of hill, in SE/4 SW/4 sec. 14, T. 31 N., R. 3 E., Iron Co., MO. Named from town of Annapolis, Iron Co., southeastern MO.
[GNC remark (February 29, 2008): It appears that †Annapolis rhyolite of †Van East group has not been applied to these rocks since this publication. Considered abandoned.]
