Pg. 237. Ancho Canyon coal bed of Raton Formation. Typically 2 beds of coal, each about 2 feet thick, separated by a hard, dense, carbonaceous shale bed 0.5 to 2 feet thick. Occurs in upper part of Raton Formation, about 1,150 to 1,200 feet above base and at about same stratigraphic position as the York Canyon coal bed. [Age is Paleocene.]
Exposed in vicinity of Ancho, Salyers, Gachupin, Bracketts and Vermejo River Canyons, central part of Raton coal field, Casa Grande 15-min quadrangle, Colfax Co., northeastern NM.
