Named from Deer Creek, a tributary of Huerfano River (D.W. Bolyard, 1956, Univ. Colorado unpub. MS thesis, p. 116-125; D.W. Bolyard, 1956a, Permo-Pennsylvanian section at La Veta Pass, CO, Rocky Mtn. Geol. Raton Basin Gdbk., p. 52-53).
